A Mass for Troubled Times: Haydn's "Nelson Mass"

Composed in 1798 and often referred to as Haydn’s, “greatest single composition”, Haydn composed this work against the backdrop of Napoleon’s campaigns in Syria and Egypt, and in an era beset by Turmoil. The composition’s name- Mass for Troubled Times- speaks to the uncertainty of the world in which Haydn lived and composed, while the piece itself spectacularly captures and conjures the chaos of the time.

Featured Soloist: Thaddeus Ennen, Baritone

The Grant Wood Operas: Strokes of Genius

The jewel of our 21st season is a Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre commission and world premiere, inspired by the work and life of Cedar Rapids native, artist Grant Wood.

Three one-act pieces by Iowa-based composers Jean-François Charles, Michael Ching and Robert Lindsey-Nassif range from whimsical, to historical, to experimental coming together in a complete experience and fuller understanding of Grant Wood.

“Baritone Thaddeus Ennen brings the right touch of pomposity to dentist Byron McKeeby, who would eventually step out of his stuffy comfort zone and into the role of the pitchfork-wielding farmer.”- Cedar Rapids Gazette
